Calling Your Nurse

You can call your nurse at any time, by using the control devices that are accessible from your bed.


Electrical Appliances

Electrical appliances (including electric razors, hairdryers, fans, clocks, radios, and TVs) are not permitted in patient rooms. You may only use battery-operated devices.


Fire Safety

Fire drills are held regularly. Please stay in your room until the drill is complete.


Flowers

Flowers delivered to the hospital will be brought to your room as soon as possible.


Language and Communication Access Services (LCAS)

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy (ODIHL) provides language and communication access services for people with limited English proficiency (LEP) or who prefer to have their health information provided in a language other than English. Free medical interpretation and document translation services are available 24/7.


Sign language interpretation services for deaf and hearing-impaired patients, and communication tools for speech-impaired patients, are also available. Language assistance coordinators at each facility provide support and guidance and ensure that our patients’ unique communication needs are met. For more information, please call (516) 881-7081.


Mail

Mail is delivered to your room by volunteers on a daily basis and is forwarded to your home after discharge.


Meal Service

You will receive a menu each morning on your breakfast tray. Meals are pre-selected by our Food and Nutrition staff, but you will have the opportunity to choose alternate items. Please review the pre-selected items for that day’s lunch and dinner and the following day’s breakfast. If you want a substitution, please call the Nutrition Office at ext. 3475 by the cut-off time noted on your menu.


Kosher and vegetarian meals are available upon request at no extra cost. A hospitality cart with free snacks and beverages also will visit during mealtimes. If your doctor has ordered a specific diet for you, then your meals will reflect those orders. Please tell the nursing staff if you have any food allergies or other special needs.


If you have any questions, a dietitian is available during daytime hours at ext. 3475. If you need assistance cutting your meat or feeding yourself, ask a member of the nursing staff for help.


Medicines

Please bring a list of your medicines with you, but leave your medicines at home. While you are in the hospital, medicines will be prescribed and provided for you.


Parking

Visitor parking is available in three parking areas: on the east side of Walnut Road, on the south side of the hospital (off Dosoris Way), and west

of the main entrance (on St. Andrews Lane).
Handicapped parking is available outside of the main entrance, at the Emergency Department, and at the Family Practice entrance. Free valet parking is offered to all patients and visitors.


Pastoral Care

Pastoral counseling is available to patients and their families. To meet with a chaplain, contact your nurse or the hospital operator by dialing 0 from your hospital phone or dialing (516) 674-7300 from another phone. The hospital’s non-denominational chapel, which is located on the ground floor, is always open. 


Personal Belongings and Valuables

If you have valuables, such as jewelry and cash, please give them to a relative or friend to take care of during your stay. You may want to have

a few dollars in cash with you, but please do not keep more than that. Please also bring a photo ID when coming to the hospital. Glen Cove Hospital cannot be responsible for any valuables that are kept in your room.

Smoking

Glen Cove Hospital is smoke free. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the hospital campus. For those patients who are smokers, “Quit-For-Keeps” is an outstanding program run by the Northwell Health System, and is located at 225 Community Dr. (South Entrance), in Great Neck.

TV

Cable channels are provided for a per-day fee. Click here for the TV channel listing. However, pCareTV is provided for free. pCareTV is an interactive system that allows patients and their loved ones to view educational, relaxation, and entertainment content. Press “Menu” from

the remote to access these interactive services. On-Demand Education and Relaxation topics include:

All televisions are closed captioned for the hearing impaired, and prism glasses are available for patients in traction. Live technical support is available 24/7 for patients to purchase television/phone services and to report problems. Dial ext. 2225 from any hospital phone.


Your Room

Glen Cove Hospital offers private and semi-private nonsmoking rooms. Patients are assigned rooms as they become available. If you request

and receive a private room, then additional charges that are not reimbursed by your insurance company may apply.


Use the remote control devices that are accessible from your bed to raise or lower the lights over your headboard, control your TV, change the position of your bed, or call your nurse.


For your comfort, your room’s temperature may be controlled by the unit located below the window. Please do not get out of bed by yourself or leave your room, unless you have your doctor’s permission. If you do get out of bed, make sure the bed is in the lowest position. If you leave your room, please let the nursing staff know where you are going. Please do not leave the unit unless you are with a staff member. Additionally, please do not get in or out of a wheelchair without help. Make sure that the brakes are locked when you are getting in or out of the wheelchair.
